Beach cleanups play a vital role in protecting coastal ecosystems, wildlife, and water quality. The data collected during these efforts helps researchers and environmental groups understand pollution patterns, track sources of debris, and inform policies that reduce waste and protect marine life.

Elisabeth Jacob ’26, a B.S. in Computer Science student at СƵ, saw an opportunity to make that process easier, faster, and more accurate.

This spring, Jacob presented her capstone project, BlueSweep: A Mobile App for Coastal Cleanup, at the 30th annual Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges Northeast Region Conference (CCSCNE) at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Her poster presentation placed her alongside undergraduate students from across the Northeast who are using computing to solve real-world problems.

“As someone who has participated in beach cleanups, most environmental organizations use pencil-and-paper tracking methods to monitor debris along the coast,” Jacob says. “I created BlueSweep to provide a user-friendly, digital alternative to these manual tracking methods.”

BlueSweep allows users to log collected waste in real time with a simple tap. The app stores data locally in a centralized CSV file, automatically calculates category totals, and generates a summary at the end of each cleanup. The results can be viewed through charts and graphs and exported for use by conservation organizations.

Designed with accessibility in mind, BlueSweep works entirely offline and does not require cloud-based services or a login system. That makes it especially useful for beaches, rivers, lakes, and other waterways where internet access may be limited.

“Through my research, I learned that most environmental apps focus solely on cleanup efforts in coastal regions,” Jacob says. “BlueSweep is unique because it specifically supports data collection for both coastal and inland beaches throughout New Hampshire.”

Jacob hopes the data collected through BlueSweep can eventually support local environmental organizations, including the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation and New Hampshire State Parks, as they work to strengthen conservation efforts across the state.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to present BlueSweep at the CCSCNE Conference,” she says. “Sharing my work was an exciting experience, and the conference was heavily discussion-based, functioning like a symposium where presenters shared their ideas. It was truly rewarding to be surrounded by such bright, hardworking peers from across the Northeast who are passionate about computing. I left this conference inspired by their innovations and research.”

Jacob credits her mentor, Dr. Mihaela Malita, an adjunct professor at Rivier, with encouraging her to submit her work to the selective conference. Dr. Malita also mentored Jacob throughout the development of BlueSweep and encouraged her to take part in STEM conferences during her time at Rivier.

“Elisabeth completed an exceptional capstone project that provided an incredible experience at the conference, helping her build confidence and expand her network,” Dr. Malita says. “She is incredibly dedicated to her work and consistently goes above and beyond. I’ve seen Elisabeth’s growth since having her in my first class, and it was truly a pleasure to mentor her throughout this project.”

Looking back on her experience, she says the support of Rivier faculty played an important role in her growth.

“I had a rewarding experience in the Computer Science program at Rivier,” Jacob says. “I’m fortunate to have had guidance from the many wonderful professors. They were extremely supportive and helpful throughout my college experience.”

In addition to developing BlueSweep, Jacob completed a Computer Science internship with Dr. Malita, assisting with the professor’s textbook, Coding Contest Problems: Workbook. Recently published for high school students, the workbook features programming problems in Python, Java, and C++. Jacob helped format the text using LaTeX markup language and tested problems and solutions for accuracy.

Jacob also served as a mathematics research assistant during the summers of 2024 and 2025 for Dr. Teresa Magnus, Professor of Mathematics at Rivier. In that role, she was a contributing editor for Dr. Magnus’s online interactive geometry textbook, Polyominos, Polygons, and Polyhedra: Discovering Geometry through Explorations, designed for college students. Jacob supported backend development by creating interactive components, including hints, detailed solutions, custom mathematical figures, and other visuals.

In January, Jacob was admitted to the Master of Science in Health Data Science program at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College. She will join a new cohort of students this fall.

“I chose health data science because this field will allow me to apply my skills in both computer science and mathematics to make meaningful changes in healthcare,” she says. “Health data scientists work in a variety of settings, including medical research, pharmaceuticals, hospitals, and government agencies, so I’m excited to further explore these career possibilities.”

As she prepares for graduate school, Jacob hopes to continue developing BlueSweep and expand its reach beyond New Hampshire to other states and additional bodies of water. By combining her interests in computer science, mathematics, and environmental conservation, she aims to create practical tools that support cleaner waterways and healthier communities.

СƵ has granted 2026 Alumni Achievement Awards to four distinguished graduates in recognition of their outstanding leadership and service. These annual awards are presented to alumni who have utilized their Rivier education to make a difference in their professions and local communities while maintaining a continued connection with their alma mater.

“Our alumni represent the University with pride and distinction through contributions to their businesses, organizations, and communities,” says Karen Cooper, Vice President for University Advancement. “It is our privilege to recognize these four remarkable individuals for their ongoing commitment to the University’s mission of transforming hearts and minds to serve the world.”

2026 Alumni Achievement Awards Recipients

ճOutstanding Business Leader Award was presented to Ivan Edwards, owner and CEO of Jovana Rehabilitation Medicine & Pain in San Antonio, Texas. Ivan treats patients with a wide range of needs, from physical medicine and rehabilitation to comprehensive pain management and neurorehabilitation, always striving to restore dignity and hope. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Midwestern University and completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Texas Health Science Center. He completed training in aerospace medicine and proudly serves his country as a U.S. Air Force Flight Surgeon. He was recently promoted to Colonel, caring for injured airmen and helping them return to duty. “It’s a way of giving back to a country that I’m grateful for and serving something bigger than myself,” he says. In addition to earning his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Rivier in 1999, he also completed a degree in theology from Kingsway Christian College & Theological Seminary in Iowa.

ճOutstanding Educator Award was presented to Lori McIntosh. Lori’s lifelong commitment to education has shaped the experiences of countless students. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education Teaching from Rivier in 1989 and returned for an M.Ed. in Educational Disabilities in 1999. She has served as a kindergarten and middle school teacher, curriculum writer, and, most recently, case manager at Nashua High School North. Lori has worked closely with students to ensure a smooth transition to high school, provided ongoing academic support, and guided students as they prepare for life after graduation. In addition, she has advised classes and clubs and provided students with meaningful global experiences. In recognition of her outstanding service, she was named Special Education Teacher of the Year by the Nashua Education Foundation in 2024. As she prepares to retire, she reflects, “I always wanted to be a teacher, and working with students and their families has been incredibly rewarding.” Her legacy is one of care, commitment, and deep connection to the students she has served.

ճOutstanding Nursing Professional Award was presented to Laura Gallagher. Laura earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Rivier in 2010 and has always been drawn to helping others, especially serving the elderly. She began her career as a registered nurse at Hanover Hill, a nursing facility in Manchester, New Hampshire, where she advanced into leadership roles including Infection Control Nurse and Director of Nursing. Laura’s dedication was especially evident when Hanover Hill became the first nursing home to experience a COVID-19 outbreak. She worked tirelessly to ensure residents received quality care while collaborating with local and state officials to adhere to critical safety protocols. In 2023, Laura joined Elliot Hospital as RN Clinical Practice Manager for a primary care office serving patients 65 and older, overseeing physicians and staff. She credits the University’s emphasis on professionalism and accountability for shaping her success. “Rivier helped me see how impactful our work is to the community,” she says, and she remains deeply committed to advancing and strengthening care for older adults.

ճYoung Alumni Award was presented to Emma Muller. Emma is committed to serving her community through mental health support. After completing her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Rivier in 2020, she began her career at the Greater Nashua Mental Health Center as a case manager, where she identified resources for clients and assisted with functional support services. After completing her master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling, she transitioned into a therapist role, focusing on trauma-informed care and providing vital services to an underserved population of children and teens experiencing anxiety, depression, and traumatic stress. She works to ensure there are no barriers to patient care and collaborates closely with colleagues to ensure clients have access to the full range of available resources. Her work provides a sense of purpose. “I genuinely feel that I would not feel fulfilled in my life if I weren’t doing something to directly contribute to the well-being of others.” Emma’s compassion and dedication to equity in care truly show the difference one professional can make in the lives of others.

Two СƵ graduate students in the Psy.D. in Counseling and School Psychology program presented their doctoral research at the Eastern Psychological Association’s (EPA) annual conference, held February 26–28, 2026, in Boston.

Mentored by Dr. Elizabeth Harwood, Noor-ul-Aine Iqbal ’26 and Jonathan Codraro ’27 participated in the conference, reflecting the University’s commitment to experiential learning, faculty mentorship, and real-world professional development.

Noor-ul-Aine Iqbal ’26 at Rivier’s 91st Commencement ceremony

“Completing a dissertation is the result of years of hard work and determination,” Dr. Harwood says. “Mentoring the next generation of psychologists in Rivier’s Psy.D. in Counseling and School Psychology program through this process is a privilege.”

Iqbal presented her dissertation, The Impacts of Racial Microaggressions on Trust During Neuropsychological Testing, as a poster presentation. Her research examined how prior exposure to racial microaggressions can reduce trust between patients and providers of different races, negatively affecting patient engagement, focus, and the accuracy of neuropsychological assessment.

“During the conference, I enjoyed connecting with peers in the field, from undergraduate students to clinicians discussing my research and its implications for practice,” Iqbal says. “Understanding how clinical tools and language affect patients is essential, and Rivier provided the structure and support I needed to pursue this work.”

Completing an internship at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Boston in behavioral medicine and neuropsychology, Iqbal graduated from the University this May. She plans to pursue a career as a neuropsychologist, integrating behavioral medicine approaches such as therapy for chronic pain and insomnia.

Codraro presented his doctoral research, Absence: How Parents Cope and Its Impact on Parenting Style, to an audience of more than 70 attendees. By examining one-parent families affected by divorce alongside those experiencing widowhood, his research explored how each situation influences parental coping strategies, parenting behaviors, and overall family functioning. Following his presentation, Codraro reflected on how his research was received.

Jonathan Codraro ’27

“I especially value the networking opportunities,” Codraro says. “Several people asked to exchange contact information to stay updated on when the datasets are complete, and whether I plan to publish. Conferences like this create a space to exchange ideas, resources, and perspectives, and that exchange is essential to our growth as professionals.”

Codraro also serves as President of the New Hampshire Psychological Association Student Organization and owns Codraro Therapeutics, his private counseling practice serving the local community. Following his graduation in 2027, he plans to expand his practice to support psychology students as they transition into the field.

Both Psy.D. students described the conference as an opportunity not only to share their research but also to represent the University through their work and discussions with peers and experts across the field of psychology.

“It’s always been important to me to act as an ambassador for the field,” Codraro says. “We do not enter this profession without a desire to help people and being able to serve in that guiding role while representing Rivier was truly an honor.”

Faculty support was consistent throughout the conference, ensuring that both students were well prepared to discuss their research and respond to questions.

“It meant a lot to have Dr. Harwood at the conference,” Iqbal says. “She was incredibly helpful throughout my dissertation, especially in providing thoughtful feedback. Because of that support, I was proud to share my experience in Rivier’s Psy.D. program with others.”

These student experiences highlight the strengths of Rivier’s Psy.D. program, nationally recognized by Forbes for its practitioner-scholar model that integrates clinical training with research-based practice.

Furthering student support through its Go Boldly 2024–2030 Strategic Plan, Rivier has completed a full renovation of Benoit Hall into a modern training hub supporting psychology, counseling, and education students, reflecting the University’s investment in preparing future professionals with the skills and resources needed to address behavioral health needs.

Prospective students are encouraged to learn more and request information about the Psy.D. in Counseling and School Psychology program.

The University anticipates enrolling more than 200 students in the program’s first year, reflecting strong demand for an accelerated pathway into the nursing profession. Designed for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another discipline, the ABSN program provides an intensive, high-quality nursing education that prepares graduates to enter the workforce quickly and confidently in as little as 16 months.

“The response to our Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program launch represents an important step forward in expanding access to a nursing education while helping meet the urgent healthcare workforce needs in New Hampshire and beyond,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President.

The program combines rigorous academic coursework, hands-on clinical experiences, and state-of-the-art simulation learning to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in today’s healthcare environments. Students benefit from СƵ’s longstanding tradition of excellence in nursing education with its ranking as the #1 nursing school in New Hampshire, experienced faculty mentors, and partnerships with healthcare organizations throughout the region.

As healthcare systems nationwide continue to face nursing shortages, the ABSN program positions Rivier as a key contributor to workforce development and community health initiatives.

“Enrollment in our accelerated nursing program demonstrates the critical role Rivier is playing in addressing the nursing workforce shortage,” says Dr. Paula Williams, Dean of the Division of Nursing and Health Professions and Vice President for Academic Affairs.  “Our graduates will enter the field faster, highly trained, and ready to deliver exceptional care—exactly what our communities need.”

The Silver Knights will open the season against the Vermont Lake Monsters on Wednesday, May 27, wearing custom Silver Knights/СƵ uniforms. Following the second Education Day game on Wednesday, June 3 against the New Britain Bees, the custom jerseys will be auctioned, with proceeds benefiting the СƵ Fund.

This fund provides critical support for the University’s highest priorities—expanding scholarship opportunities, enhancing academic and athletic programs, and enriching the overall student experience—ensuring Rivier students have the resources they need to thrive.

Education Days have become one of the Silver Knights’ signature community events, giving students the opportunity to experience a professional-style ballpark atmosphere while connecting with local organizations. Each student in attendance receives a free hot dog, water, chips, and a cookie, hand-distributed by members of the Silver Knights roster in full uniform.

Last year, the Silver Knights hosted two sold-out Education Days, welcoming more than 6,000 students to the ballpark.

“СƵ is proud to partner with the Nashua Silver Knights on an event that brings so many local students together in the heart of our community,” says Karen Cooper, СƵ’s Vice President for Advancement. “This partnership reflects Rivier’s commitment to education, to the city of Nashua, and to creating meaningful opportunities for young people.”

“Education Days are one of our favorite traditions here at Holman Stadium,” says Cam Cook, General Manager of the Nashua Silver Knights. “There’s nothing better than seeing the ballpark filled with young, local students cheering on the Silver Knights. It creates such a memorable experience not only for the kids, but also for the teachers, chaperones, and our players and staff. The ceremony highlighted the accomplishments of the Class of 2026, and the University honored the New Hampshire Tech Alliance in recognition of its service to the people of New Hampshire and its leadership in strengthening the state’s technology and innovation economy.

Julie Demers, MPA, Executive Director, served as Commencement speaker and received an honorary degree on behalf of the organization, whose leadership reflects a strong commitment to nurturing a vibrant technology ecosystem in New Hampshire through partnerships, knowledge-sharing, and public policy engagement.

Rivier conferred the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, upon the NH Tech Alliance in recognition of its commitment to innovation, leadership, and service. The University also recognized the leadership of the Tech Alliance’s Board of Directors for advancing values that reflect Rivier’s Latin motto, Altiora et Meliora—higher and better.

“СƵ is honored to recognize the mission and vision of the NH Tech Alliance connecting a vibrant New Hampshire technology ecosystem with an engaged and skilled workforce through Rivier’s academic programs in artificial intelligence, computer science, cybersecurity, and information systems,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President. “Rivier joins with the NH Tech Alliance in building signature partnerships in both teaching and learning and supporting a philosophy that New Hampshire can grow its own in meeting the needs of the technology industry.”

A strategic and collaborative leader, the NH Tech Alliance works to strengthen connections across industry, academia, and government, advancing initiatives that support innovation, workforce development, and long-term economic growth throughout the Granite State.

Additionally, the NH Tech Alliance has broadened both its reach and influence, growing its membership, expanding programming, and solidifying its role as a vital resource within the state’s technology sector. Its work reflects a clear focus on supporting companies at every stage of development, from emerging startups to well-established firms, by helping them access the capital, talent, and connections needed to succeed.

In her address, Demers reflected on the strength of Rivier’s tech-enabled campus, featuring its cybersecurity labs and nursing simulators, and the advantages of its location in a small state where direct access to leaders, decision-makers, and opportunity is both possible and impactful.

She encouraged graduates to embrace emerging technologies while remaining grounded in their authenticity, underscoring the importance of balancing innovation with humanity. Demers also noted that in a rapidly evolving world, it is essential to recognize how technology and human connections can coexist.

“The more advanced our technology becomes, the more valuable your humanity becomes,” Demers says. “We are entering a time where content can be generated instantly, where resumes can be optimized by algorithms, where conversations can be simulated, and ideas can be replicated. In a world where so much can be artificial, what becomes rare is what is real.”

Rivier students Erin E. Jasper (B.A. Psychology) and Yvonne Wu (MBA: Information Technology Management) welcomed their classmates on behalf of the undergraduate and graduate degree recipients. Jasper reflected on the shared effort, perseverance, and support that brought the Class of 2026 to Commencement, encouraging graduates to recognize the family, friends, faculty, and mentors who helped guide them along the way.

Wu spoke about the personal meaning of earning her MBA, describing it as the fulfillment of a childhood dream and a promise she has long carried. She acknowledged the challenges many graduates faced in reaching this milestone, the loved ones who supported them, and the faculty who helped shape their journey. Looking ahead, she encouraged the Class of 2026 to move forward with confidence, resilience, integrity, and purpose.

СƵ is experiencing a strong enrollment cycle through the month of May, highlighted by a 9% year-over-year increase in undergraduate and transfer student deposits. This indicator of student commitment reflects sustained interest in Rivier’s academic offerings and campus experience, positioning the University favorably for the remainder of the enrollment cycle.

“Key enrollment indicators are trending positively, supporting continued growth in deposits and strong conversion rates throughout the coming months,” says Ricky Mott, Vice President for Enrollment Management. “We are on pace to achieve one of the largest undergraduate enrollments in Rivier’s history this fall,” says Mott.

Fall 2026 student registrations at the Professional Studies, Graduate, and Doctoral levels are also showing growth at this time, strengthening the institution’s overall enrollment outlook. Professional Studies registrations are currently 61% ahead of last year, driven in large part by the launch of the University’s new accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.

Academic innovation continues to be a focus of the University’s Go Boldly 2024-2030 strategic plan with the introduction of programs in forensic science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and other emerging fields.

The University’s innovative Degree in 3 initiative, launched in the fall, offers a fast path to the workforce through a new 90-credit applied bachelor’s degree. With undergraduate majors in artificial intelligence, business management, criminal justice, and elementary education, three-year degree students can save a full year of tuition, housing, and other expenses and maximize their return on investment by entering the workforce sooner.

The University’s new and longstanding academic programs are designed to align with workforce demand and provide students with practical, hands-on learning opportunities. By integrating cutting-edge technologies and interdisciplinary approaches, Rivier equips graduates with the skills needed to excel in rapidly evolving industries.

Another contributor to the University’s momentum is its continued investment in campus infrastructure. This fall, students will be welcomed into two new Rivier Village residence halls. Designed with modern amenities and community-focused spaces, the Rivier Village complex now includes four buildings housing 150 upper-class students.

The recently completed, comprehensive renovation of Benoit Hall has created a home for students and faculty in counseling, psychology, computer science, criminal justice, and education programs. The updated facility offers advanced learning spaces, collaborative areas, and resources tailored to the evolving needs of these disciplines. This renovation reinforces Rivier’s dedication to delivering high-quality, student-centered academic environments.

These recent enhancements follow the creation of business and security studies facilities, including cybersecurity labs, the Nursing Simulation and Clinical Education Center, and large-scale construction projects in recent years, including the Science and Innovation Center and athletics pavilion with stadium seating.

Prospective students are encouraged to visit the Rivier campus in Nashua and to apply at .
